It cost more than $160,000 to capture suspected cop killer Raul Gomez-Garcia.

According to published reports, the month-long hunt for Gomez-Garcia cost more than $160,000 in overtime pay and travel expenses. Gomez-Garcia is accused of shooting Denver police Detective Donald Young and John Bishop while they were working off-duty but in uniform at a private baptismal party. Young was shot in the head and killed. Bishop was shot in the chest and saved by his bulletproof vest.

Detectives working the case flew to Los Angeles after tips led them to believe Gomez-Garcia fled to southern California. The officers stayed in L.A. until it was determined that he had fled to Mexico.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson told the Rocky Mountain News that the costs were appropriate for such an extraordinary case.

"I would say this was an extraordinary crime, an extraordinary case. The Denver Police Department is always going to put the appropriate amount of officers and time into investigating a case, How do you put a price on bringing a criminal to justice?" Jackson said.
