Woman Accused Of Killing 2 Men Competent To Stand Trial

Psychiatrist: Torrez Believes She's A Government Assassin

A Denver woman accused of two brutal knife attacks believes she is a government-paid assassin, according to testimony presented at her competency hearing.

Despite the testimony, Amber Torrez, 20, was found competent to stand trial Tuesday for the stabbing deaths of John W. Hand Jr., 55, and Masfin Gazahgne, 40. Torrez is charged with first-degree murder in the two cases.

Amber Torrez is charged with the killings of two men.

Hand's body was found in his east Denver apartment on March 28, 2004. An autopsy revealed he had been stabbed 30 times in the face, arms, chest and legs. A day later, a driver for Freedom Cab was fatally stabbed. Gazahgne had been stabbed 39 times, according to an autopsy.

A psychiatrist testified that Torrez believes she either works for the U.S. government as an assassin or believes that the government sanctions her "assassinations." The psychiatrist said he believes she is delusional and not mentally competent to stand trial.

The doctor testified that Torrez doesn't believe she is mentally ill and won't plead guilty by reason of insanity.

However, a second psychiatrist who examined her testified that Torrez is competent to stand trial and knew exactly what she was doing when she allegedly stabbed the two men to death.

She allegedly told the second psychiatrist that she killed Hand because he attempted to pay her to have sex with him and killed Gazahgne because he tried to rape her.

The judge agreed with the second psychiatrist and set her next court date for Aug. 8.

Torrez attempted to plead guilty at the end of Tuesday's hearing, but the Rocky Mountain News reported that the judge ordered her to be quiet and said she could speak at her Aug. 8 hearing.
