Father Of Young Shooting Victim Lashes Out In Court

Garfield County Hearing Prompts Several Outbursts

POSTED: 10:45 am MDT July 22, 2005

The father of a 9-year-old Garfield County boy allegedly shot to death by a 14-year-old neighbor was pulled from the courtroom Thursday after authorities said he threatened the boy's life.

A group of deputies surrounded William DeMarco after they said he lunged at the teenage suspect, in handcuffs and leg irons, during an advisement hearing in Glenwood Springs, Colo., the day after the fatal shooting.

DeMarco uttered a string of profanities before and after saying, "I'm going to kill you," the Grand Junction Sentinel reported. Other deputies led the 14-year-old from the courtroom.

DeMarco exploded again as the boy left the courtroom.

"I'm going to nail you, mother------," he yelled. "You killed my baby!"

The deputies around DeMarco led him from the courtroom at that point.

The boy was arrested Thursday in connection with the shooting of Taylor Allen DeMarco. Deputies were called to a mobile home in Battlement Mesa at about 2:30 p.m. and found the boy mortally wounded on the front landing. The suspect and a 13-year-old witness were standing in the yard when deputies arrived.

DeMarco was rushed to a medical center in nearby Rifle, where he died. The suspected shooter was arrested after deputies interviewed him and a 13-year-old witness about what happened. There were no parents home at the time of the shooting. Authorities said the gun that was used belonged to the suspect's mother.

The witness told investigators that the 14-year-old brought a loaded .22-caliber pistol to the mobile home and shot DeMarco. Investigators are still trying to determine what prompted the shooting.

Meanwhile, deputies have increased their patrols in the Battlement Mesa neighborhood where the shooting occurred as tensions are running high between the two families. The suspect's mother told deputies that she was afraid to return to her home, which is down the street from the victim's family, out of fear of reprisal by the victim's father.
