A number of small wildfires broke out along the Front Range and in the mountains Sunday afternoon.

The largest was a 12-acre wildfire in the Roosevelt National Forest near Drake, Colo. That's in the Big Thompson Canyon.

A single-engine air tanker and heavy air tanker were making drops on the fire. County and Forest Service fire engines were also at the scene and a team of smokejumpers was ordred.

The fire was burning in grass, brush, and pine trees, but no structures were threatened, the forest service said.

The Hells Canyon Fire was burning Sunday afternoon 16 miles southwest of Loveland. The fire was estimated to be 5 acres in size. A single engine air tanker was working the fire.

The Lykin Fire Boulder County was 50 acres and was on private property about 12 miles west of Longmont.

Another wildfire was burning Summit County, just outside the town of Frisco Sunday afternoon. The Meadow Creek Fire was about 2 acres in size before it was contained.

A small wildfire was reported in the Pike National Forest near Devil's Head Sunday afternoon. The fire was reported to be a few miles northeast of the Devil's Head, in the Jackson Creek area.

The state's largest wildfire, this one burning on pinon and juniper on federal and private land near Mesa Verde National Park, had grown to 2,760 acres on Sunday, and potentially threatened seven homes.

Much of the fire fuel is dead as a result of insect infestations, said Jen Chase, spokeswoman for firefighters battling the blaze. The fire was burning in both Montezuma and La Plata counties, on Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs and private land.

Fire engines were stationed by the homes and Hotshot crews supported by aircraft were fighting the fire. The fire, first reported Thursday, was believed to have been started by lightning.
