Westminster Pit Bull Mauls, Kills Neighbor's Sheltie

Neighbors Learn That This Was Not Dog's First Attack

Residents of a Westminster townhome complex are angry after learning that a pit bull that mauled to death a neighbor's dog over the weekend had attacked before.

Debbie Wright's sheltie, Misty, was mauled to death by a neighbor's pit bull.

Debbie Wright said she was shocked Saturday afternoon when a neighbor pounded on her door saying something bad had happened.

"I went running out and my daughter was standing, holding the leash, looking like she was in shock. And lying there was my dog covered in blood," said Wright.

Misty, her 8-year-old sheltie, had been attacked by a neighbor's pit bull -- the same pit bull that she had a run-in with last year.

"That dog, the first time, jumped out through the front window. It broke the whole window down and pinned my little sheltie up against the car," said Wright.

On Saturday, Wright's 10-year-old daughter was walking Misty in the 8900 block of Field Street when the pit bull, which was also on a leash and being walked, lunged after the sheltie, witnesses said.

Neighbors responded to sounds of the attack and helped rescue the sheltie. Misty was taken for emergency veterinary service, but died because of the trauma suffered during the attack.

"She didn't have to go like that," Wright said.

After putting up fliers to thank her neighbors for their help, Wright learned that her dog wasn't the only victim.

"People just out walking their little dog to the mailbox, taking trash out, say they've been attacked," Wright said.

The pit bull involved in the attacks is quarantined in the Table Mountain Animal Shelter pending the outcome of a court ruling.

The owner of the pit bull, 27-year-old Christina Loetscher, was cited for having an unlawful vicious animal. Loetscher's first court appearance is scheduled for July 12.
