According to witnesses, the gunfire erupted at about 7:30 p.m. after a verbal argument between two people on different levels of the mall.

Corey Rice said he heard several gunshots when he turned around to see a young woman fall to the ground. He ran to help her and then saw her male companion struck by a bullet, Rice told 7NEWS.

A second woman -- believed to be a 50-something innocent bystander -- was also hurt in the shootout.

The young woman whom Rice tried to help died shortly thereafter. She has not been identified but was said to be between 25 and 30 years old.

The man and the older woman were loaded into waiting ambulances shortly after the shooting. Their conditions were not immediately known.

The two male suspects were taken into custody after an off-duty police officer working at the mall radioed for help and other police units surrounded the mall, to keep the suspects from escaping.

The west end of the mall where the shooting took place was cordoned off as police began interviewing witnesses to get a description of the shooting suspects.

The Aurora Mall is located at 14200 E. Alameda Avenue and was closed immediately following the shooting.

The identities of the victims and the suspects have not been released.
