DENVER -- Denver prosecutors will oppose bail for Lisl Auman this week while she is awaiting her August retrial in the slaying of a Denver police officer.
Auman, 30, was tried and sentenced to life in prison for her part in the shooting death of Bruce VanderJagt, 47. He was shot to death by Matthaus Jaehnig in 1997 after law enforcement officers chased Jaehnig and Auman to a Denver apartment complex following a pursuit down U.S. Highway 285 from the mountains of Jefferson County.
Auman surrendered to police and was sitting handcuffed in the back of a police car when Jaehnig shot VanderJagt to death and then killed himself with Vanderjagt's handgun.Because Auman was part of the original crime and allegedly failed to help police with information at the scene, she was convicted of felony murder and sentenced to life in prison.Auman's case caught the nation's attention after celebrities including Hunter S. Thompson and Warren Zevon rallied for her freedom. They and other supporters questioned the fairness of the felony murder law that sent her to prison for life with no chance of parole.Last March, the Colorado Supreme Court overturned Auman's 1998 conviction, because of faulty jury instructions. She has already served seven years of her life sentence.District Attorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said the judge approved a request by defense lawyers to keep Auman in the Denver County jail rather than return her to a women's prison.A bond hearing is set for this week, and a motions hearing is set for July 11. A new trial is scheduled for Aug. 22.
