A man suspected of shooting and killing a Denver police officer and wounding another officer on Mother's Day has finally been caught in Mexico, Denver police said.

Raul Garcia-Gomez, 20, was captured without incident by federal agents and U.S. Marshals Saturday evening, Denver police Chief Gerry Whitman said.

He was arrested at about 6 p.m. Denver time in the city of Culiacan, in the state of Sinaloa, on the western coast of Mexico. He had not changed his appearance but he was definitely in "hiding" mode, Whitman said.

"We are so relieved," Detective Donnie Young's widow told 7NEWS.

"We are extremely happy that he was caught and that he was caught so soon. We expected it to take months. That it only took a few weeks has relieved us greatly," Kelly Young said.

Kelly Young expressed her thanks to the U.S. Marshals, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Mexican officials and to everyone who worked so hard to get Garcia-Gomez caught.

During a press conference Saturday evening, Whitman said that he too was relieved that this part of the case is now over.

"I'm extremely happy," Whitman said. "I talked to Donnie's dad long distance. He is very emotional and relieved that the arrest has been made. Jack Bishop was notified also and he's very thankful that this person has been taken into custody. I talked to the arresting officers on the ground in Mexico, who were standing right next to Garcia-Gomez, and I personally thanked them on behalf of the family."

"There's a sense of relief, but now we have to move onto the next phase and hold him accountable for what he did," he said.

Whitman also announced that four other people were taken into custody Saturday. Garcia-Gomez' father, sister and a man who may be his uncle were being held in Los Angeles for immigration violations but they may also be charged with harboring a fugitive. They were identified as Mercedes Castaneda Gomez, Ayde Gomez, and Santiago Nicholas Hernandez.

Whitman said that more arrests may be possible in Los Angeles where detectives continue to work the case. In Denver, Jaime Arana-Del Angel was charged with being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.

Detectives believe Arana-Del Angel helped Garcia-Gomez flee Denver and head toward Mexico. Whitman still seemed upset that Garcia-Gomez had gotten so far with help from family and friends.

"I think it's outrageous. I don't know what we can do with the people in Mexico who harbored him but I think in Los Angeles, Denver and any place in between, we have information ... that they could be held accountable," Whitman said.

Detective Donnie Young, 43, was working off-duty at a private baptismal party at Solano Ocampo on the night of May 7th when he and his partner, Detective John Bishop, were ambushed from behind as the party was letting out.

Bishop, 35, was shot once in the chest and saved by his bulletproof vest. Young was shot three times, including once in the head, and was pronounced dead on the morning of Mother's Day.

Since that day, hundreds of officers working in Denver, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Mexico have been working feverishly trying to capture the man responsible. For weeks the search focused in Southern California, where they believed Garcia-Gomez had been hiding out with his family.

After Garcia-Gomez's car was found behind a Los Angeles home, his family fled to Mexico, neighbors said.

Garcia-Gomez will be taken to Mexico City on Sunday. A team of Denver police detectives and deputy district attorneys will be there to interview him, Whitman said.

District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said that they are working to extradite him to Denver.

"Now that he's in custody in Mexico the options are we bring him back here and work with the Mexican government to try to get that accomplished or we could prosecute him down there ... I intend to get him back here as soon as we can get him back," Morrissey said.

Extradition may be tricky though because Mexico has a history of not extraditing anyone who faces the death penalty or life in prison.

"We will continue to negotiate with whoever we need to to get him back here," Morrissey assured. He said he hasn't made the decision on whether to waive the death penalty to get Garcia-Gomez back in the United States.

"That's certainly a complicated decision that has to be made after speaking to the victim's widow and certainly to Detective Bishop, family members... That's a decision that I don't have to make now but I certainly am going to include the people that need to be talked to about that decision ... If he wants to fight coming back, then of course we're going to have to go through the court system down there to get him back. This is not going to be something that's going to be done in a week or so," Morrissey said.

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, who was also at the Saturday night press conference, said he would leave it up Morrissey to answer the death penalty question but he did say that he would like to see Garcia-Gomez back in Colorado facing the U.S. judicial system.

"To be able to bring this individual to justice, I think is a powerful thing for the city," Hickenlooper said.

A $200,000 reward had been offered for information leading to Garcia-Gomez' arrest. Whitman said that one "good tip" that led them this far will be considered for the reward.
