A junior high school student was killed and three other teenagers injured Wednesday afternoon when a teen driver failed to stop at a stop sign and was broadsided by a large pickup truck, the Colorado State Patrol said.

The 15-year-old girl who was killed was identified as Shawntae Taylor, a student at Weber Junior High School in Fort Collins. Kurtis Soeby, 18, and Brendon McBride, 16, were critically injured.

The teen driver was also injured but his identity and age are being withheld because he is likely to face criminal charges.

All three boys were students at Berthoud High School.

The teens were in a 1991 Lexus that was traveling east on Larimer County Road 4 near Berthoud when the Lexus failed to yield the right-of-way at a stop sign, the CSP said. The pickup truck was driven by Leslie Mechem, 68, of Berthoud, Colo. He was treated at the accident scene and released.

CSP investigators said none of the teens were wearing seat belts. One victim was thrown 30 feet, investigators said. Two of the injured teens were transported to Poudre Valley Medical Center in Fort Collins and the other male teen was transported to McKee Medical Center in Loveland.

The state patrol is investigating whether drugs or alcohol may have played a part in the crash. Troopers said they found drug paraphernalia in the car.

The fatal crash comes just one month before a new state law is to be enforced.

The teen driving law that takes effect July 1 doesn't allow new drivers to have friends in their car.

In the first six months of having a license, teenagers are not allowed to drive minors around in the car -- with the exception of family members -- unless an adult is also in the car.

During the second six-month period of a new license, teen drivers can only have one other minor in the car.
