Two teachers at Academia Ana Marie Sandoval were shot Tuesday afternoon with a BB gun or a pellet gun, Denver police said.

A teacher's aide was shot in the throat and a first-year art teacher was shot in the leg. The adults were transported to a nearby hospital where their minor injuries were checked out. Their identities have not been released.

Both teachers were on the school playground, located at 3655 Wyandot St., when the shots came through a chain link fence, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. About 200 students were outside, but none were injured.

Detectives don't know if the BBs or pellets came from a passing car or from inside a nearby building.

No arrests have been made and police have no suspects at this time. Officers were trying to locate the BBs or pellets used in the shooting.

"This is unacceptable. This is untolerable. That's why we're going to need help from the community to find out what happened," said Denver Public School Superintendent Jerry Wartgow. "BB gun or pellet gun ... whatever it is, it's not allowed on campus."

Wartgow went to the hospital to visit the teacher shot in the neck, who was undergoing a precautionary x-ray. The other teacher received a band-aid and returned to school to reassure students. The teacher's aide said that when she was hit, she wasn't sure what it was, saying it could have been a rock.

A letter was sent home to parents Tuesday afternoon explaining what happened. The students will be kept inside during recess for the rest of the week, which is the last week of their school year, school officials said.

The Academia is a bilingual Montessori school with 311 students. Parents were stunned when they arrived to pick up their children and saw dozens of police officers on campus. Many said they can't see how this could happen, because all the teachers and students are wonderful.
