Boulder Probe Into Ecstasy Party Continues

Report On Deputies' Response Expected Friday

A report on two deputies who responded to a party where a 16-year-old ingested a fatal dose of ecstasy is expected Friday, Boulder County Sheriff George Epp said.

Deputies Kirk Watson and Kenneth Batka were dispatched to the Superior home Jan. 28 shortly after Brittney Chambers took the popular party drug to celebrate her birthday. She went into convulsions, fell into a coma and died Feb. 2.

Watson is on administrative leave, and the report will help determine what disciplinary action will be taken, Epp said.

"I really don't want to criticize" the deputies, Brittany's mother, Marcie Chambers, said, because at the time no one thought that Brittney's reaction was serious enough to put her in a coma.

"I suspect they had the same feeling I did, that Brittney would go to the hospital and be back shortly," Chambers said. "Should they have acted differently? Apparently their boss thinks so, because one is suspended."

Epp said Tuesday that the deputies left about 1:15 a.m. after the Chambers family went to the hospital, then returned at 6 a.m. Eight teens who apparently had taken ecstasy from the same batch as Brittney's were then taken to Boulder Community Hospital for observation and later released.

"I thought it was really weird that they just left," said Lori Shepard, a close friend of Brittney's who was at the home that night. "Who knows what could have happened to the other kids at the party?"

Shepard also said that one of the officers was making "rude" remarks to Brittney. She said the officer said, "Hope you liked the birthday present you gave yourself," or words to that effect.

Epp said that he could not talk about the actions of the officers that night, including what comments may have been made.

Two people suspected of supplying the ecstasy, Travis Schuerger, 20, and Rebecca Sheffield, 18, are scheduled to be formally charged Thursday.

Four other juveniles accused of being connected with the case are scheduled for a first court appearance on Friday.
