Churchill Faces Deadline To Respond To Plagiarism Charges
CU Professor's Essay About Sept. 11 Victims Protected

DENVER -- Monday is the deadline for University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill to respond to claims of plagiarism.The committee investigating Churchill determined he could not be punished for his essay, which compared the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to a Nazi official. But the committee is investigating charges that he copied other people's work.The embattled ethnic studies professor has only a matter of hours to respond to allegations that he copied or misrepresented other authors' works, and that he may have misrepresented his American Indian heritage.
Churchill has denied any wrongdoing.The panel determined previously that the First Amendment protects his essay, but he could lose his job if investigators find evidence of plagiarism.
