Police: Man 'Masterminded' Own Kidnapping

Wife Dealing With Strange Turn Of Events

A Vail man accused of lying about being kidnapped at gunpoint was jailed Sunday on charges including false imprisonment, false reporting to authorities and domestic violence.

Police say Michael Moore concocted his own kidnapping.

Michael Sean Moore, 35, also was arrested on suspicion of aggravated robbery, menacing with a deadly weapon and theft, police said. Detective Sgt. Susan Douglas described Moore's wife as the victim but said she was unhurt.

The incident began shortly before 9 p.m., Thursday when two men pushed their way into Moore's residence after he answered the door. One of the men was armed with a handgun, according to Moore's wife. The men then forced Moore to leave with them in his vehicle, leaving his wife behind, who contacted police.

The wife said she did not know the two men.

Police said Moore's credit card was used in Denver early Friday and that Moore called his wife Friday night, apparently from Denver, to tell her he had "escaped" but was afraid he might be in trouble with police. He told his wife he had to "hurt" the two men who supposedly kidnapped him.

Moore’s wife, whose was not identified, was taken to a safehouse after she contacted police. Police said they won't release her name or her current whereabouts to ensure her safety.

Douglas said Sunday that Moore "masterminded" the events and that his wife was dealing with the developments.

"She's in shock, obviously very upset and angry," Douglas told the Vail Daily News. "But she's very strong and she's dealing with this extremely well."

Officers found Moore at a friend's home in nearby Avon on Saturday and arrested him on a municipal warrant for failure to appear in a previous case, Douglas said.

He was arrested again Sunday morning on the latest charges. He was to face a court appearance in Eagle County on Monday, when bond would be set.

Police were still trying to identify the two unknown men.

Douglas said Moore had a previous record including arrests on suspicion of assault and battery. She did not immediately have other details.
