Denver Police Officer Shot, Killed

Bulletproof Vest Saves Second Officer's Life

UPDATED: 12:51 pm MDT May 8, 2005

A Denver police detective, working off duty, was shot and killed and another police officer working with him was shot and wounded early Sunday morning in southwest Denver.

DPD
Officer Donald Young was shot and killed early Sunday morning.

Donald R. Young and John H. Bishop were in full police uniform, working at the Solano Ocampo Hall at 1733 W. Mississippi when the shootings occurred, police said. Young was killed and Bishop survived.

At about 1 a.m., a suspect approached the two officers from behind and shot both of them as a large crowd was leaving the building, according to police. Neither officer had time to return fire before falling to the ground.

Two other police officers working nearby heard the shots and saw a male suspect running with what appeared to be a weapon. The officers lost sight of the suspect in the large crowd.

After running across the street, the two officers found the wounded officers and called in "officer down" at 1:05 a.m. Both wounded officers were rushed to Denver Health Medical Center where Young died at 1:33 a.m.

Bishop was wearing a bulletproof vest, which is credited with saving his life. He was released from the hospital Sunday morning.

Police are looking for a Hispanic male with very short hair, thin moustache, who is slightly heavy set. He was described as approximately 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and possibly in his mid 20s.

Detective Young is survived by a wife and two young daughters. He had been with the Denver Police Department since 1993. His current assignment was the Fugitive/Bomb Unit and Vice/Narcotics.

Young was the recipient of the Medal of Honor Award, Distinguished Service Cross Award, 10 official commendations, and two letters of commendation.
