DeBiase Taught At Bishop Machebeuf High School

POSTED: 3:19 pm MDT May 5, 2005

Additional charges were filed Thursday against a high school basketball coach accused of sexual assault.

The new charges against Craig DeBiase include one added count in connection with a 17-year-old victim and three new counts in connection with an additional victim, Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said.

Craig DeBiase faces a number of charges in connection with his high school coaching job.

DeBiase, 42, is now charged with five felony counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and two felony counts of sexual assault on a child, pattern of abuse.

Morrissey said the charges allege that DeBiase sexually assault a female student between August and October 2000 and that a second student, a 16-year-old female, was sexually assaulted in 1999.

Both girls participated in the basketball program that DeBiase coached at Bishop Machebeuf High School. Denver police said DeBiase was an athletic director, teacher and coach at the school.

The 17-year-old told police that they built a bond and DeBiase confided that he was "falling in love with her," according to his arrest affidavit.

"In case there are other victims out there, we'd like them to come forward," Theresa Garcia, of the Denver Police Department, said after his arrest.

DeBiease remained free Thursday on a $15,000 bond. His preliminary hearing was set for May 26 in Denver County Court.

Anyone with information regarding DeBiase is asked to call the Denver Police Department at (720) 913-6050 or Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-STOP, (720) 913-7867.
