A teacher at Bishop Machebeuf High School has been suspended after being accused of sexually assaulting a former student.

Craig DeBiase faces a number of charges in connection with his high school coaching job.

Craig DeBiase, 42, was arrested Monday on charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. Denver police said DeBiase was an athletic director, teacher and coach at the school.

A 17-year-old girl told police that DeBiase was a volunteer coach in August 2000 when she was on a summer basketball team. She said they built a bond and he confided that he was "falling in love with her," according to his arrest affidavit.

Shortly after that, the relationship turned physical and the two had sexual relations, the affidavit stated. The girl told police she and DeBiase had sex 20 times over a period of months.

Since DeBiase was also involved in coaching summer basketball teams not related to the school so he may have had contact with many more kids, police said.

"In case there are other victims ut there, we'd like them to come forward," said Theresa Garcia, of the Denver Police Department.

Anyone with information regarding DeBiase is asked to call the Denver Police Department at (720) 913-6050 or Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-STOP (720) 913-7867.
