ASPEN, Colo. -- A special edition of Rolling Stone magazine commemorating "gonzo" journalist Hunter S. Thompson is selling briskly in town. Rolling Stone dedicated 33 pages in a special edition to the author, who shot himself in the head Feb. 20 at his home in nearby Woody Creek. Thompson was on Rolling Stone's masthead for 35 years.
At Carls Pharmacy, typically three to four issues of the magazine are delivered each month, but manager Cindi Fielder asked her distributor to send at least 25 copies of the special issue. "I didnt realize how popular it would be until I sold out of all of those," she said. Fielder reordered 150 copies, then 48 more copies, and finally another 150. Bookseller Mark Billingsley at Explore Booksellers said the store has sold between 30 and 40 issues, compared to fewer than 10 in a normal month.
