Broomfield police are searching for a cop impersonator who pulled over a couple near Flatiron Crossing and roughed up the driver before he took off.

The driver told police he was on West Midway Boulevard, just east of East Flatiron Circle Thursday afternoon when he saw a black sedan that looked like a police car in his rearview mirror. He said he started to pull over when its emergency lights were activated but he noticed that the "officer" was already standing outside his window before he had completely stopped his vehicle, police said.

The cop impersonator then opened the driver's door, pulled the driver out, pushed him toward the front of his car and then reached in to pull the keys from the ignition, the driver said.

A female passenger inside the car said she didn't look at the "officer" because she was too frightened.

The "officer" then opened the trunk of the victim's car, looked inside and then left the scene in his black vehicle, police said.

The uniformed man made a U-turn, went westbound on West Midway Boulevard and then turned left on East Flatiron Circle, police said.

Police believe the cop impersonator was driving a black vehicle with a low-profile blue and red light bar on its roof and some type of white lettering on the vehicle.

The man believed to be a cop impersonator was described as white, 6 feet 1 inch tall, with blue or green eyes and a muscular build. He had short blond or light brown hair, no facial hair and possibly had a pierced left ear although he wasn't wearing an earring, the victim said.

The driver described the man's features as "chiseled" and said he was "clean-cut." The uniform he was wearing was dark blue, with a patch on the right shoulder that resembled a police department patch. The uniform had a badge on it but the driver did not see a name tag, police said.

The "officer" also had a textured duty belt on and the victim said he saw a pistol, baton, spare magazines and other duty gear on the belt. The victim also heard what he believed to be a police-type radio and thought that the suspect may have had it on his duty belt.

If you see this vehicle or have any information about the impersonator in this case, call (303) 438-6463 or (303) 438-6400.
