Denver-Area Mail Thefts On The Rise
Thieves Target Cluster Mailboxes
UPDATED: 1:30 p.m. MST January 18, 2001
The U.S. Postal Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of any person connected with mail theft.
Stealing U.S. mail is a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
Denver postal inspectors announced the reward Thursday because there has been a recent increase in mail thefts in Denver and along the Front Range.
Thieves are breaking into neighborhood silver cluster mailboxes in residential communities and apartment complexes, the inspectors said.
More than 100 incidents of cluster mailbox theft and vandalism have been reported in just the last three months. That compares with a total of 72 for the last fiscal year.
Recent break-ins have been reported in Denver, Aurora, Arvada, Broomfield, Lakewood, Ken Caryl Ranch, Columbine Hills, Northglenn, Thornton, Wheat Ridge and Westminster.
Denver postal inspectors are working closely with law enforcement agencies to pursue leads and raise customer awareness.
You are asked to report any information to local police or call the postal inspector's office at (303) 313-5320.
