Couple Channels Angels For Life Lessons

Skeptics Claim Channeling Angels Is Repackaged New Age Religion

POSTED: 9:34 am MST February 21, 2005

Do you believe in angels? There are some people who claim they can hear angels talking, and not just any angels, your angels.

7NEWS Anchor Mitch Jelniker visited the couple, ranked by a local newspaper as Denver's "Best Psychics," to see what happens at a channeling session.

"She needs to sit down and she needs to use a little calendar that humans use -- with little boxes," said Chris Neelis. He had his eyes closed and was speaking in an odd voice.

Neelis believes the voice is that of an angel. She says she is a "trans-channeler," a way for angels to speak to others. She simply closes her eyes and says the angels begin talking through her -- using a voice that's not her own.

"Do I hear it?" Neelis asks. "What is sounds like is just wind going through. It's almost like you're able to visualize there's a little door there (pointing to forehead) and they just open the door and here comes the teachers."

Neelis said that these teachers, or angels, provide lessons for anyone who inquires.

"We have teachers who work in this school room of life," said Neelis.

Chris and her husband, bob, have turned the topic of angels into a full-time job. They hold "Angel Workshops" where they teach about angels. But they're best known for their channeling sessions.

"We don’t perform miracles," said Bob Neelis. "We try to give them as much wisdom as we can."

Skeptics say that claiming to channel angels is nothing more than the latest packaging of new age religion.

A lot of this has to do with the search for spiritual meaning that people haven't found in our fast, materialistic society," said Carl Raschke, a professor of religious studies at the University of Denver.

"It was aliens at one time. Then it was ascended masters. It's gone through various forms and phases -- but it's really the same old, same old," he told Jelniker.

"So, is this a harmful practice?" asked Jelniker.

"I would say it's probably psychological harmful," said Raschke. "It's a way to open yourself up to be exploited - not only monetarily but spiritually."

But Chris and Bob Neelis have plenty of customers who believe the only ride they've been taken on is one toward enlightenment.

"It has helped me grow and develop in many ways," said Halen, a customer.

"They're teaching you a lot of times things you already know, you just don't know how to get there," said Linda, another customer.

"For me personally, it has worked and that's what I go by," adds Patty, another customer.

"Mozart had a gift," said Bob Neelis. "Would we hold it against him if he wrote beautiful music?"

"We always say, 'What have you got to lose?'" said Chris Neelis.

Jelniker asked one of the women why she doesn't use prayer, if she's seeking a higher power. She said she does that, too, but angel channeling gets her answers quicker.

Channeling isn't free. Chris and Bob's readings cost $10 for 15 minutes, $60 for 30 minutes and $120 for a one-hour reading.
