GREELEY, Colo. -- A girls' softball coach is under arrest, charged with having sex with a 14-year-old player.Michael Joseph Escobar, 26, was taken into custody after consenting to an interview with Greeley police Thursday. The alleged sexual contact occurred last summer.
Escobar has been coaching girls summer softball for about four years, Greeley police said. Police say the girl played in the same summer league Escobar coached -- the Greeley-Evans Youth League -- but she was not a member of his team. The girl's father apparently came upon some information that the teen was communicating to the 26-year-old coach, and when he confronted her, the girl said that she was involved in a physical relationship with the suspect. Her statement prompted the father to contact police, who are now in the process of trying to contact other teens the suspect coached, as witnesses or possible victims, as well as other possible victims.Escobar has been charged with four felony counts including sexual assault by a person in a position of trust, assault with a pattern of conduct, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and promotion of obscenity to a minor.Police believe Escobar had sponsored team parties at a house in the Greeley area, and had engaged in activities that culminated in the third and fourth charges.Anyone who might have more information about Escobar is asked to call (970) 350-9670.
