Residents of Red Mountain in Aspen, Colo., have been warned to watch their pets after a coyote killed a small dog on Sunday. The dog, a Coton de Tulear breed, had been let outside with a golden retriever when it disappeared from the patio of the home.
When the manger of the home started looking for the dog, he heard a shriek from another resident who said she saw a wild animal with something in its mouth. The manager later learned it was a coyote and it had the small dog in its mouth. The bloody remains of the pet were found a short time later. An Aspen animal control officer said that they typically get about 10 calls a year about pets carried off by coyotes -- mostly cats.Kevin Wright, the state's district wildlife manager for Aspen, told the Aspen Daily Times that coyotes are smart and will sometimes pretend to play with a dog in order to lure it away from its home. Once the animal is away from the home, the coyote will kill it.
