MIDLAND, Texas -- A former Texas high school girls' basketball coach who has been indicted on sex charges in Texas and New Mexico is now under investigation stemming from similar allegations in Colorado, a prosecutor said."Something may have happened at the University of Colorado," New Mexico state prosecutor Gloria Garman told the Midland Reporter-Telegram. "We're investigating it through the university. It looks like he's certainly taken advantage of his position as a coach to exploit girls who are there for a much different purpose."Garman said that her office is investigating the new allegations through CU, where Daniel "Dan" Simmons was formerly an assistant coach of the women's basketball team. Simmons is under indictment on sex charges in Midland, Texas, Lubbock, Texas and Albuquerque, N.M.
The New Mexico indictment accuses Simmons of having sex with one of his players at Albuquerque's Rio Grand High School from 1994 to '98. He has also been indicted in Midland for allegedly fondling a a girl there in 2003. He's scheduled for trial in Lubbock April 18 for alleged sexual misconduct at a basketball tournament there. Simmons is free on bond. His attorney said Simmons will challenge the allegations. He has been released on a $250,000 bond.
