It May Be Slow Going On I-70 This Week

CDOT Crews Begin Rock Scaling Program To Prevent Slides

POSTED: 11:00 am MST December 7, 2004
UPDATED: 11:59 am MST December 7, 2004

If you're planning to drive west on Interstate 70 through the Georgetown area, it may take you a while longer this week because rock mitigation work is getting underway.

Massive boulders were blasted into smaller bits and then removed by bulldozers. See More Dramatic Pictures Of The Rockslide.

Crews with the Colorado Department of Transportation are stopping traffic in both directions for up to 20 minutes several times a day. They'll be clearing rocks that have the potential to fall and create a slide like the massive one in Glenwood Canyon on Thanksgiving Day.

Crews will be working between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 1 p.m. on Friday. The work is set to last through next week, but the schedule could change if there's bad weather.
