The streets near Gun Club Road and Hampden were shut down for several hours Thursday morning while police officers searched for a teen who reportedly rammed a police car with his stolen car, ditched the vehicle in the Lowry landfill and then fled on foot.Police began pursuing the teen just after 4 a.m., when officers caught someone stealing a Land Rover from a garage in east Aurora. Officers tried to stop him but he took off, ramming at least one patrol car with his vehicle. He led officers on a high-speed chase that at times exceeded 80 mph on Hampden, Aurora police said.Officers said the teen then drove to the Lowry landfill, just east of E-470, abandoned the vehicle about a quarter-mile into the landfill and fled on foot. Officers surrounded the area and shut down the landfill to make sure that the teen could not escape. They don't know if he's armed and dangerous but weren't taking any chances.
"We know that this individual is capable of, brazen enough to ram a police car. That's his mindset, so we just want to make sure it's safe for people coming in to work," Aurora police spokesman Larry Martinez said. The officer who was in the patrol vehicle that was hit did not suffer any injuries.More than a dozen trash vehicles were lined up outside the landfill, waiting to get in before officers cleared the landfill and called off the search.Police are still looking for the teen, described as a white male with sandy blond hair. He is about 5 feet 5 inches tall and despite the frigid early morning hours, he was wearing just a T-shirt, police said.A second man involved in the crime was taken into custody.
