CSU Freshman Paralyzed Jumping Into Leaf Pile

Heffern To Be Moved To Craig Hospital

POSTED: 11:05 am MDT October 18, 2004

A freshman student at Colorado State University remained paralyzed Monday after jumping from a tree into a pile of leaves at the CSU on Oct. 10.

Colin Heffern, from Cheyenne, Wyo., was playing with friends when he jumped off a tree limb and broke a bone in the cervical segment of his spinal cord, a friend of the family said.

On Friday, doctors at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo., removed a piece of bone from Heffern's hip to use it to help stabilize his neck.

It is not known if the paralysis is permanent, or if he will regain the use of his limbs.

Heffern will be moved to Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., for several months of rehabilitation.

He had been planning to major in landscape architecture.
