Suspected Cop Impersonator Arrested

Espinoza Picked From Photo Lineup

UPDATED: 5:47 pm MDT October 8, 2004

A man suspected of pulling over cars while impersonating a police officer was under arrest Friday.

Castle Rock police believe that Jose Luis Delgado Espinoza has been impersonating a cop, and allegedly pulling people over on Founders Parkway.

Jose Luis Delgado Espinoza is currently in jail on $25,000 bond.

Espinoza was arrested Thursday night in Aurora, Colo., after an Aurora officer stopped him for driving erratically.

Aurora police suspected that he may have been the cop impersonator Castle Rock police had been searching for. He had a blue and red light bar on the dashboard of his white Crown Victoria and the license plate matched the same numbers that were copied down by a person who had been stopped by a police impersonator.

Castle Rock police were called around 6:30 p.m. and the suspect was taken back to Castle Rock. Two of the victims picked Espinoza out of a photo lineup and he was arrested.

Police had earlier said they were looking for a man who was using flashing blue and red lights to pull people over in the Founders Village area of Castle Rock.

The latest incident occurred on Sunday night, when the man pulled a woman over to issue her a "verbal warning." The fake officer said that he didn't have time to write her a ticket, but he jotted her personal information down and warned her to slow down, Castle Rock Police Detective Troy Stembel said.

Impersonating a police officer is a felony in Colorado, punishable up to $100,000 in fines and an eight-year prison sentence.
