BOULDER, Colo. -- A University of Colorado freshman found dead at a fraternity house last month died of acute alcohol poisoning, the coroner said Monday.
Lynn "Gordie" Bailey, an 18-year-old from Dallas, died with a blood alcohol level of 0.328 percent, coroner Thomas J. Faure said. Bailey's death has been ruled accidental. No other drugs were found in his system.
Bailey was found in the library of the Chi Psi house just off-campus on Sept. 17. Police have said he had participated in a fraternity pledge ceremony the night before that involved heavy drinking. The pledges were blindfolded and taken to a field for a bonfire ceremony that included 10 bottles of whiskey, six 1.75 liter bottles of wine and three kegs of beer.A fraternity pledge, James Cumming, told investigators he saw two fraternity members using markers to write on Bailey about 1 a.m. at the house. Bailey and another pledge were targeted because they had passed out with their shoes on. Cumming said the brothers became angry when he told them to stop and refused until he got another fraternity member to tell them to quit.CU officials have asked the national organization to shut down the chapter. They say the school has a history of difficulties with the chapter."The coroner's report concerning the death of Lynn Gordon Bailey Jr., as well as recent events at several other universities, tragically underscores the dangers associated with the misuse and abuse of alcohol. We are committed to doing everything we can to prevent such a tragedy from happening again," said CU Chancellor Richard L. Byyny. "As announced last week, I have asked our campus and the Boulder community to launch a concerted attack on the misuse and abuse of alcohol, including intensified educational programming throughout our students' college careers. We also are reviewing all aspects of Greek life, including the role of alcohol at social events."The coroner will release a final written autopsy report in several weeks.
