911 Transcript Of Emergency Call From CU's Psi Chi Fraternity

The following is the transcript of the 911 call from the Psi Chi fraternity in Boulder to 911 8:57 a.m. on Sept 17.

Dispatch: 911, what's your emergency?
Caller named "Cal": Hey, I need to get a ...
Dispatch: Hello? Hello?
Cal: Are you there?
Dispatch: I didn't hear what you said. Your cell phone's cutting out. What do you need?
Cal: I need to get an ambulance.
Dispatch: Where are you?
Cal: Uh, I'm in Boulder.
Dispatch: Where, where in Boulder? Give me an address?
Cal: 1080 14th Street.
Dispatch: 1080 14th Street?
Cal: Yeah.
Dispatch: What's going on?
Cal: Uh, we got a guy who's passed out. He drank way too much. We found him this morning.
Dispatch: Is he breathing?
Cal: I don't know. He's not waking up.
Dispatch: And this is at 1080 14th, correct?
Cal: It is.
Dispatch: How old do you think he is?
Cal: Maybe 18, 19. (In background) Wake up.
Dispatch: How do you know he was drinking?
Cal: I got back last night and a bunch of them were all drinking.
Dispatch: OK, so he's passed out inside the house?
Cal: Yeah, inside.
Dispatch: Is there an apartment number?
Cal: Uh, no, it's just a fraternity.
Dispatch: OK, is he on the floor, or...?
Cal: He's on the floor.
Dispatch: Is he blue or cold?
Cal: He's not very cold. He doesn't look blue.
Dispatch: But you can't tell if he's breathing or not?
Cal: No, ‘cause he's on his, he's lying on his stomach. Let me see if I can roll up his shirt. It doesn't look like it.
Dispatch: You don't think what? It doesn't look like what?
Cal: It doesn't look like he's breathing very much at all.
Dispatch: At all? Or not very much?
Cal: It doesn't look like it at all.
Dispatch: Do you see his chest rising?
Cal: Well, he's lying on his chest.
Dispatch: OK, can you turn him over on his back, if you don't suspect any injuries? Can you turn him over on his back?
Cal: Hang on.
Dispatch: And then let me know, if you have to put your ear kind of down by his mouth or something to - or your face, see if you can kind of feel if there's any breath coming out.
Cal: He's a big guy.
Dispatch: How big?
Cal: 230 pounds.
Dispatch: OK.
Cal: I don't know if I can roll him over.
Dispatch: OK, well, I don't want you to injure yourself, but if you can, or if you can find any way if he's breathing for me, ‘cause if you want to, I can help you through doing CPR. But we have to make sure that he's not breathing first. Can you hold on one second for me?
Cal: Sure.
Dispatch: Don't hang up, OK?
Cal: OK, I won't.

Dispatch: You still there?
Cal: Yeah.
Dispatch: OK, so what - is he still on his stomach?
Cal: Yeah, he is. I can't roll him over.
Dispatch: That's OK. Can you determine at all if he's got any kind of breathing going on or ...
Cal: Um, I'm looking. (Pause.) He's still really warm.

Dispatch: Does he have anything coming out of his mouth, like vomit or ...
Cal: There's old vomit on him.
Dispatch: Old vomit?
Cal: Yeah, I don't think it came fresh. Nothing's coming out now.

Dispatch: Do you know if he has any history of medical problems or anything?
Cal: I do not know.
Dispatch: OK, so in the house, is it just you and him?
Cal: Yeah, and one other guy.
Dispatch: OK, so where's the other guy right now?
Cal: Right here with me.
Dispatch: Can he tell if he's breathing?
Cal: (Background: Can you tell if he's breathing?)
Dispatch: What's your name?
Cal: I'm Cal. C-a-l. ... No, he can't tell either.
Dispatch: He can't tell either? OK. Is there anything - is he just lying, like, flat on his stomach, like on the carpet, or ... Cal?
Cal: Yeah.
Dispatch: Is he just lying flat on the carpet, or are there any pillows or anything around him?
Cal: Flat on the carpet.
Dispatch: OK, yeah, that's good. If you can't turn him over, which it sounds like you can't, just at this point, just don't put anything around him so if he can breathe, we just leave that space around him open. And I do have some help on the way, OK?
Cal: Thank you.
Dispatch: Let me just stay on the line with you until they get there so we can make sure that they find your house OK. So there's no apartment at 1080 14th St.?
Cal: No, it's just a big ... fraternity.
Dispatch: OK. Is the front door unlocked?
Cal: There's a guy waiting out front.
Dispatch: OK, excellent. Tell me if you see him do anything, like, you know, seizure or vomit some more or if you notice any injuries, if you notice ...
Cal: ... Is that OK?
Dispatch: I'm sorry?
Cal: I'm trying to - I'm just patting him on the back.
Dispatch: Yeah, that's fine.
Cal: (To someone in the room: "(Expletive deleted), man. What the (Expletive deleted) did you guys do last night?")
Dispatch: Do you mean you're patting him on the back just, like, kind of reassuring him or like ...
Cal: Trying to see if I can get a response out of him.
Dispatch: OK.

Cal: (In background: Come on dude, wake up.) All right, I hear the ambulance.
Dispatch: Yeah.
Dispatch: Do you have any idea how much he drank?
Cal: I have no idea. I wasn't here last night.
Dispatch: OK. And there's no, like, no pill bottles or anything else around?
Cal: No, I don't see anything. I don't think he'd be doing that either.
Dispatch: OK. Cal, can you just confirm ...
Cal: (Sighs) Dispatch: Did he respond at all to that?
Cal: Uh, no.
Dispatch: No?
Cal: No. No. Dispatch: Can you see his eyes?
Cal: They're closed.
Dispatch: OK.
Cal: Yeah.

Cal: They are here.
Dispatch: The paramedics are there?
Cal: Yeah, there's an officer here.
Dispatch: An officer? OK, then I'll go ahead and let you go. The paramedics will be there shortly. All right?
Cal: Yeah.
Dispatch: Thanks, Cal.
Cal: Yep.
Dispatch: Alright, bye.
