Suspect Sentenced In Car-Surfing Accident

Victim Remains In Critical Condition

A 17-year-old girl arrested after another teenager fell and was critically injured while "car surfing" was sentenced to one year in juvenile detention.

Police Lieutenant Rob Korber says the older teen pleaded guilty Friday in district court to misdemeanor joy riding. He says she received the maximum sentence.

Her name hasn't been released, and the initial charge of vehicle theft was amended to the lesser count.

The teen was arrested in Cheyenne, Wyo., shortly after the stolen car was found in a residential neighborhood of the city Thursday afternoon. Police had been looking for it since Monday's accident in Fort Collins, Colo., which left Shailynne Manning, 14, in critical condition.

Police said that two females were in the car when Manning fell from the vehicle onto a Fort Collins street, striking her head. Police are still looking for the second person who was in the car. Witnesses said the two females asked someone to call for help, then they sped away before police arrived.

The Manning family told police that Shailynne had asked for permission to go out with some new friends on Monday evening, but they didn't know she was going to Fort Collins. She was reported as a runaway when she didn't come home, according to police in Cheyenne.

The Manning family issued a statement Friday that denied Shailynn was a runaway. They also disputed reports that she was "car surfing" when she fell from the stolen car:

"I would like to clarify what has been misinformation reported in the media," said Don Manning. "It is my understanding from the police that Shailynne was not car surfing but instead was sitting on top of a parked car when the driver abruptly moved the car forward. This caused Shailynne to fall off."

Fort Collins police reported earlier that she was car surfing and had asked for the public's help in identifying Manning, since she carried no identification. They distributed a composite sketch of her to the media, hoping someone would recognize the drawing. Police in Cheyenne contacted Fort Collins police after realizing that the description fit their runaway report.

The 2004 Buick Century that was recovered in Cheyenne was reported stolen there on Aug. 27. Korber says detectives are attempting to determine if the 17-year-old was at the wheel when Manning slid off.
