Aug. 13, 2004: Little Girl Has Big Heart For Homeless

Ella Douglas Makes Snack Bags For People Living On Streets

POSTED: 2:23 pm MDT August 13, 2004

It takes glue, glitter, gumption, and a whole lot of heart.

Ella Douglas came up with a unique, personal idea to help the homeless.

"We're making snack bags for homeless people," said Ella Douglas, this week's 7Everyday Hero.

Her snack bags are decorated from the heart and filled with love.

"I put 'God Bless' with a heart on it," said 10-year-old Ysidro Amaro.

"There's raisins, trail mix, and there's Ritz crackers," said 10-year-old Maricella Amaro.

The bags are a pretty big undertaking started by Ella, a little girl with a big heart.

"(I do it) because they don't have any food," Ella explained.

"Ella was curious about people -- when we saw them with signs -- who were homeless," said Allison Douglas, Ella's mother.

So the 4-year-old had an idea.

"She said, 'I think we should make snack bags. I think we should go to the store and get a bag and put snacks in it.' And we said, 'That's actually a good idea,'" said Allison Douglas.

Ella's concern and caring has become contagious.

"I'm doing something nice for people," said 8-year-old Nate Flack.

"Yeah, doing something nice to somebody that will help them a lot in their life," said Ysidro Amaro. "It makes me feel good."

"It's fun and it's a good thing to do, to give to them," said Maricella Amaro.

"It feels great to help them and stuff," said 11-year-old Elizabeth Barrett.
