Alcohol Suspected In Mountain Hike Debacle

Hiking With 2 Broken Arms Not Best Idea, Rescuer Says

POSTED: 9:31 am MDT August 12, 2004

Alcohol may have been involved in an incident Tuesday in which a Frisco, Colo., man went for a hike with two broken arms. His hike ended with two broken arms and a possible broken knee.

The man, who was not identified, was finally rescued by the Summit County Rescue Group.

According to the Summit Daily News, the man and a friend went for a hike on Mount Royal Tuesday afternoon, even though the man had broken both arms the previous week.

The man fell during the hike, but his friend couldn't get him down the rocky trail and called for help.

The man complained of knee and rib injuries and might have further injured one of his arms because he tucked it under him to protect it when he fell, according to rescuers.

Rescue members located the man and placed him in a wheeled stretcher to remove him from the mountain.

"This whole thing could have been totally eliminated by avoiding alcohol," said Mike Schmitt of Summit Rescue. "It's not worth it. It puts a lot of people at risk when they do that. They don't take into account the other people they're going to involve."
