DENVER -- A woman who told police she was terrorized by her husband for 17 hours at their apartment faces possible eviction.Cathy Sandoval said she was beaten and held against her will Sunday by her husband, Vincent Martinez. After managing to escape, she called police to report the incident.Police were sent to the Denver Housing Authority apartment but Martinez slipped out a back window shortly after officers arrived.
Police later climbed in a second-floor back window, unaware that Martinez was not in the apartment, and fatally shot Frank Lobato, an invalid who was lying in bed with a soda can. Officers thought the silver object in his hand was a gun, police said after the shooting.Martinez was taken to a hospital for injuries sustained when he jumped out the second-floor window.Meanwhile, Sandoval said she was contacted by housing authorities who questioned whether Martinez was listed on the lease and whether he has any recent felony convictions."Both of those are very serious and could lead to instant eviction," said Sal Carpio, in an interview with the Rocky Mountain News.Sandoval said she and Martinez were married about two months ago, but he was not living with her, just visiting.Housing authorities guidelines spelled out in the tenant's lease requires anyone staying in an apartment longer than two weeks to be listed on the lease. They must also undergo a criminal background check to see if they have any recent felony convictions.
