Teen Charged In Bicyclist's Death

Driver Drifted Off Road While Looking At Clock, State Patrol Says

POSTED: 9:31 am MDT June 11, 2004

A 17-year-old Kremmling, Colo., resident has been charged in the death of a bicyclist along Highway 9 south of Silverthorne, Colo., last month.

The teenager, who was not identified because of her age, faces a charge of first-class misdemeanor careless driving resulting in death in connection with the May 2 accident that killed Jeffrey Ferber, 59, of Frisco, Colo. The charge carries possible penalties of 10 days to one year in jail and possible fines of between $100 and $1,000.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the driver of a four-door Nissan coupe was looking at the car's clock and drifted off the side of Highway 9, striking Ferber who was stopped on the shoulder, waiting for a fellow rider to catch up.

Ferber, a Copper Mountain ski instructor for 5 years, died of head injuries. He was an avid cyclist and a semiretired accountant.
