A former Dakota Ridge High School teacher and tennis coach will be in court Monday to be advised on charges of sexual contact with a minor.

Kevin Ponis

Kevin Ponis, 35, is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student in 2000 and 2001, when the girl was 17 years old.

Since his arrest on May 6, three former Dakota Ridge students have come forward with similar accusations, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

Ponis resigned from his teaching position last Thursday.

Ponis was arrested at a high school tennis tournament earlier this month after a medical professional told sheriff's investigators that a former Dakota Ridge student disclosed detailed information about her sexual relationship with one of her former teachers. Sheriff's investigators believe Ponis "groomed" the 17-year-old for sex for several months before the alleged assaults.

Ponis was released from jail the day of his arrest after posting $25,000 bond.

Investigators last week executed two search warrants, one at Ponis' home in Douglas County and another at the school. The records of Ponis' arrest and the investigation have been sealed.

Ponis had been a social studies teacher and tennis coach at Dakota Ridge since 1998. He taught at Alameda High School from 1994 to 1998. The Jefferson County School District has begun an internal investigation.
