Olathe Man Killed By Lightning While Working In Yard

Body Discovered 6 Hours Later

POSTED: 11:54 am MDT May 13, 2004

A man from Olathe, Colo., was killed Wednesday after he was struck by lightning while doing yard work at a friend's house 8 miles southwest of Montrose.

Jose Manuel Lemus-Rodriguez , 34, was found dead in the yard along with a family dog. Both had burns consistent with a lightning strike.

The Montrose County coroner said 56 lightning strikes were recorded within five miles of the property around the time that Lemus-Rodriquez was killed.

Although he was believed to have died around 9:30 a.m., his body wasn't discovered until 3:30 p.m., the coroner said.

He is survived by a wife and four children, ranging in age from 6 to 15.

Lemus-Rodriguez's death is the first lightning fatality in Colorado this year.

Six people died from lightning strikes in Colorado during 2003. The state averages three lightning fatalities annually.
