Man In Fatal Police Shootout Identified

Bailey Man Killed Monday Following Thornton Shooting

POSTED: 4:09 pm MDT May 11, 2004

A man shot to death by Thornton, Colo., police was identified Tuesday as a 19-year-old Bailey, Colo., resident.

Thornton police said the man who fired at officers and then was shot and killed was Anthony D. Pino Jr.

According to police, the incident started when Pino ran a stop sign and crashed into another vehicle around 11:15 a.m. Monday. Pino pulled a weapon and fled on foot, police said.

A short time later, two officers walked into the back yard of a nearby house and said Pino opened fire, missing them. Police returned fire and killed Pino.

Police said the car Pino was driving was reported stolen in Denver. Pino's driver's license was also under denial at the time, according to police.

A half-sister of Pino and her 5-year-old daughter were in the car when it crashed: both received minor injuries. The driver of the other car was also injured.

Had Pino survived, he would have faced charges of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, police said Tuesday.
