A Jefferson County high school teacher is accused of sexual improprieties with a student.
Kevin Ponis, 35, was arrested Thursday at a tennis tournament for investigation of sexual assault on a child. A former female student at Dakota Ridge High School reported the alleged assault to a medical professional, who had contacted the sheriff's office.
According to investigators, the alleged assaults occurred on several occasions in 2002 and 2001. Sheriff's investigators believe that the suspect "groomed" the 17-year-old student for several months before engaging in sex with her.Investigators would not release additional details about the case because the investigation is ongoing. The sheriff's office said there is the possibility that other students -- both past and present -- may have been assaulted by Ponis. They urged anyone with additional information to contact the Investigations Division at (303) 271-5633.Ponis is on paid administrative leave from the school. He is being held at the Jefferson County Detention Facility under a $25,000 bond.
