Dave Logan Introduced As Cherry Creek's Football Coach

Logan Talked To Parents, Athletes On Thursday Night

Six-time state championship winning football coach Dave Logan was introduced to the Cherry Creek High School community Thursday night as the new head football coach.

"Frankly, I'm a little uncomfortable because other high school coaches don't have a press conference," Logan said. "I understand why O do."

Logan was fired from Mullen High School earlier this month and Cherry Creek's football coach Mike Brookhart stepped down to concentrate on coaching the basketball team, his job as dean of students and his family.

Thursday night, Logan met with parents and students at Cherry Creek.

"I just spoke from the heart and tried to tell them that a little bit of my philosophy, with respect to how we were going to deal with their sons," said Logan.

Logan admitted it will be a learning process.

"We have to learn the community. We don't ride in on a white horse and say we've got all the ideas. We're here to blend in and hopefully continue the tradition and take it a couple of steps further," Logan said.

Logan said some of Creek's coaches may stay on.

"There are coaches in this building who have played an important role in this program for a long time, I'm going to talk to every single one of them and then do the best I can to kind of formulate the staff that will, kinda, be blended," Logan said. "Some of these guys I have worked with for 17 years are not going to be able to come, because of the logistics."

Logan and the former Creek football coach are friends.

"Ironically, Coach Brookhart and I are great friends, and we have talked on almost a weekly basis for probably the last three, four years," Logan said. "We have kidded about this. We've had flippant conversations about this, we've had serious conversations about this. Without him being a part of this, I wouldn't be standing here."

Cheery Creek freshman Tyus Carter told 7NEWS he's looking forward to working with Logan.

"He's been very successful and he knows how to lead a team," said Carter. "So I think he could bring a lot to the table here at Cherry Creek High School."

Mullen Controversy

When Logan was let go from Mullen, the school initially said it wanted a coach who could work at the school as a full-time faculty member. Logan worked part-time as a coach.

Days later, Mullen self-reported potential football recruiting violations to the Colorado High School Activities Association, said school President and CEO Ryan Clement.

Logan said the allegations took him by surprise.

"I haven't had any violation in 19 years as a head coach," Logan said.

Logan's Coaching Resume

Logan was football coach at Mullen High School for nine years. He earned a 110-12 record there and won four state championships.

Logan previously coached at Chatfield and Arvada West, winning state championships at both schools. In 2010, Logan was named the high school coach of the year after Mullen won its third straight 5A football title.

According to his former student-athletes, Logan never took a salary, instead dividing the money among his assistant coaches.
