A 28-year-old skier from Evergreen died in an avalanche while skiing at the Mary Jane side of Winter Park on Sunday.

Christopher Norris was found in the trees off Trestle Trail, a black diamond run.

The ski patrol received a call at 5:15 p.m. when Norris failed to meet up with father-in-law as planned, Winter Park spokeswoman Mistalynn Lee Meyeraan said.

The ski patrol immediately began search efforts and found Norris in a treed area between Trestle and Roundhouse trails in the debris field of a small snow slide.

He was unresponsive and the ski patrol began CPR. He was transported to Denver Health East Grand Community Clinic and Emergency Center at the base of Winter Park Resort, where he was pronounced dead.

The Grand County Coroner’s office said the results of an autopsy showed Norris died of asphyxiation.

Skiers were not allowed up on the Mary Jane runs on Monday morning, while the man's death was investigated. After a safety assessment, everything was opened except Sunnyside Lift.

Winter Park said the Colorado Avalanche Information Center confirmed that Norris died "a relatively small avalanche."
