Colorado Springs firefighters have given up the search for three children who disappeared underground.

The kids were playing near a manhole on Murray Boulevard between Academy Boulevard and East Platte Avenue in Colorado Springs on Monday morning when they suddenly disappeared.

Utility crews said they tried to grab the kids, but the children ran off in the sewer system.

Firefighters said two teams did an extensive search of the storm sewer system. Firefighters said they found several possible exits, but no kids.

The sewer system pipes in the area are 5-feet in diameter.
