BOULDER, Colo. -- Residents in Boulder appear to have some kind of drive to buy hybrid vehicles. The Daily Camera newspaper reports statistics from the Boulder County Clerk and Recorder's Office show 4.8 percent of all vehicles registered in the city of Boulder are hybrids. In all, there were 59,718 vehicles registered in Boulder through December 2011, and 2,884 of them were hybrid electric vehicles, according to the Clerk and Recorder's Office. Of those hybrids, 2,148 are Toyotas. There were 33 all-electric vehicles registered in Boulder.
That's not shocking, according to Mike Lather, general sales manager at Larry H. Miller Toyota in Boulder."We're a huge market for (hybrids)," Lather told the Camera. National statistics are harder to find, but there have been about 2.15 million hybrid electric vehicles sold in the United States since 1999, which would represent less than 1 percent of all registered vehicles in the country. By June, the city of Boulder plans to have 40 electric vehicle charging stations around town.
