Witnesses: Man Hits Snowmaking Hydrant, Trees

POSTED: 3:02 pm MDT April 12, 2004

A 53-year-old skier died Monday at Breckenridge Ski Resort after colliding with a padded snowmaking hydrant on Peak 9.

Witnesses said the unidentified skier caught one of his skis, struck the hydrant, then hit nearby trees. The Summit County Sheriff's Office said the man was skiing alone and wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The accident was reported to the ski patrol at 12:09 p.m., on the Sundown run, a intermediate slope.

Ski patrollers took the injured man to the base of Peak 9, where he was transported to Breckenridge Medical Center and pronounced dead.

The man's identity was withheld until next of kin could be notified.
