A Summit County man used a barbell, two golf clubs and a fireplace poker to drive a persistent intruder out of his Keystone home early Sunday morning.

Kristopher Zeller

A beaten up and bruised Kristopher Zeller (pictured, left), 34, of Virginia, was found walking near the home a few minutes later and was arrested in connection with the intrusion. He faces charges of first-degree burglary, third-degree assault and trespassing.

He may also face kidnapping charges for allegedly attempting to take an 8-year-old boy from his bed before his parents were awake, the Summit County Sheriff's Department said.

The strange series of events began just after 4 a.m. when Greg McMurray was awoken by his wife, Kelly, who told him that there was an intruder in the home. McMurray stood in his bedroom doorway and saw a man approaching.

McMurray said he yelled at the man to leave them alone and grabbed a nearby barbell to force the intruder out of the bedroom doorway while his wife and their 8-year-old son ran into the bathroom, locked themselves in and called 911.

Even after several shoves with the barbell, the intruder refused to leave so McMurray grabbed a golf putter and hit the man over the head, possibly breaking his nose and causing him to bleed profusely, the Summit County Sheriff's Department said.

McMurray hit the man again and again, and with such force that the putter finally broke into pieces. But the man refused to leave, McMurray said. So McMurray seized a second golf club, again hitting the intruder to the point where the club shattered.

Finally, McMurray grabbed a wrought iron fireplace poker and continued to hit the man so hard that the iron poker was bent in the process. This was what finally persuaded the burglar to flee, the sheriff's department said.

When deputies and police finally arrived at the home, on the 200 block of Wild Irishman Lane, a bloody Zeller was found walking nearby. He was taken to Summit Medical Center for evaluation and treatment of his injuries and booked into the Summit County Jail where he remains until his court appearance.

After interviewing family members, the 8-year-old boy told detectives that Zeller tried to snatch him from his bed while he was sleeping.

Court records show Zeller was charged and convicted twice for driving under the influence in 2003 in Virginia.

Deputies suspect alcohol or drugs may have been involved. The results of the toxicology reports have not been released.
