A man who died after he was trapped in an avalanche on 14,003-foot Mount Huron has been identified as a California resident.

Jigmet Dawa was caught in about 6 feet of snow Friday when he and two companions attempted to cross a snowfield, authorities said. They triggered an avalanche spanning 1,500 feet long and 1,500 feet wide, said Cpl. William Vidmar of the Chaffee County Sheriff's Department.

The two companions escaped and called for help.

Dawa's age and hometown were not available.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center indicated that the victim was snowshoeing and the other two people in the party, on skis, were able to move out of the avalanche path.

Search and rescue teams from Lake and Summit counties, including avalanche rescue dogs from the Copper Mountain ski patrol, assisted in the rescue.

Mt. Huron is a Fourteener in the Sawatch Range, near Windfield, Colo., south of Buena Vista.

At least three other people have died in avalanches in Colorado this year.
