Child Found Safe After Brief Carjacking

Nanny Helping Fallen Man When Her Car Is Stolen

UPDATED: 11:35 pm MST November 14, 2011

A 3-year-old boy was found safe in an abandoned car after his nanny was carjacked in east Denver Monday afternoon.

A woman called police shortly after 4 p.m. to say she was driving along East Sixth Avenue and Albion Street when she saw an elderly man fall down at a bus stop.

She jumped out to help him and said another man jumped into her car.

She pleaded with the carjacker to stop but he took off, dragging her 10 to 20 feet, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

The nanny said the boy she was caring for was in the back seat.

The woman flagged down another car several moments later, and she and the driver tried to follow the carjacker but by then he was long gone, Jackson said.

Police officers got a report of a car sideswiping another car about a block away. Officers converged on the area and found the woman's silver Scion TC abandoned, with the toddler inside.

Two officers put the boy into a police vehicle while other officers put up crime-scene tape. The boy appeared unharmed and was not crying when he was carried to the police vehicle. Paramedics were called to the area as a precaution.

He was reunited with his parents around 5:20 p.m.

When asked about the boy's condition, the boy's father told 7NEWS, "He's in good spirits."

The search continues for the carjacker. He was described as a white man, about 6 feet tall, dark hair with a pony tail, wearing blue jeans, a black jacket and baseball cap.

Police believe he may have boarded a bus and do not believe he is in the area anymore.

East 5th Avenue was closed between Colorado Boulevard and Albion Street while police investigated.

“I think were all relieved, but were not relieved yet because they havent found him," said local resident Tracy LePine. The carjacking ended in front of her home.
