CU Panel Learns Two More Women Have Claims Of Sexual Assault

MESA Says Women Came Forward In Last 3 Months

Two more women have claimed that they have been sexually assaulted by University of Colorado football players, a spokeswoman for rape crisis group told an independent investigating panel on Tuesday.

There are now 10 women who have reported they were sexually assaulted by Colorado football players or recruits since 1997. No criminal charges have been filed in any of the cases.

The two women reported the assault in the last three months, said Janine D'Anniballe, the executive director of the group Moving to End Sexual Assault.

She said confidentiality rules barred her from disclosing details, including whether the players are still on the team. She also did not say whether the two women plan to bring their allegations to the police or whether they have hired lawyers.

Although she didn't go into further details, the MESA spokeswoman didn't mince words when she accused school officials of blaming the victims.

"This once again underscores the important work of the independent investigative commission and the special prosecutor. It continues to be our hope that they will be able to ascertain relevant facts and make an accounting and assessment of them," said CU spokeswoman Michele Ames in a released statement.

The seven-member committee investigating the scandal is meeting for the fifth time since it was formed by the Board of Regents. Panelists have been going through thousands of pages of depositions and hearing a lot of public testimony after three women filed lawsuits against CU alleging that the football program used alcohol and sex to recruit top players.

Those three women claim they were raped during or just after a December 2001 off-campus party for football players and recruits.

Attorney General Ken Salazar is also investigating and CU recently hired a person to act as a liaison between the president, chancellor and the athletic department.

Head coach Gary Barnett was placed on leave pending the outcome of investigations.
