Store Layaways Making A Comeback

7NEWS Uncovers Why You Need To Read The Fine Print

Layaways were a popular way to help shoppers during the Great Depression. Now it's making a comeback. But 7NEWS discovered it's important to read the fine print.

Under the system, shoppers usually make small month payments, in order to secure their item of choice.

"Right now the economy is bad. No one can afford to make big purchases," said shopper Laurie Chavez.

Chavez is a layaway regular. It's been a tool to help her manage her money after losing her job.

"Mainly gifts for my grandkids. And I just bought a patio set," said Chavez. A "lifesaver," she said.

Toys 'R' Us recently announced it's now offering this pay as you go system on all of its toys. In the past, it was just big ticket items. Along with Sears, TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Best Buy, this Great Depression trend, is now making a comeback.

Certified financial planner Rahul Kashyap of Colorado Financial Planners says the rules vary from store to store.

Some will keep your money and your merchandise if you fail to pay in a timely manner.

Others charge an up front service fee.

"If you have a $10 fee, you have a $50 dollar item, that's a 20 percent mark-up," said Kashyap.

But if you don't want to use a credit card, and can pay on-time, this may be something to consider.

"For me, it's really beneficial," said Chavez.

There are some on-line incentive programs too, similar to those offered in stores.
