Wildfires Burn In Larimer, Morgan Counties

Campfire Blamed For One Fire Start

UPDATED: 5:17 pm MST March 19, 2004

Crews fought a 7-acre wildfire on national forest land about 50 miles northwest of Fort Collins Friday.

Officials said it started from a neglected campfire.

No structures were threatened, but Forest Service officials are concerned that the dry, windy weather predicted could spread the flames.

The fire was reported about 4 miles southeast of Red Feather Lakes.

A red flag warning was issued for the Colorado Front Range Friday morning. It meant that low humidities and high winds were expected, which could contribute to significant fire behavior.

Forty firefighters and six engines were dispatched to fight the fire. A helicopter was placed on standby.

The fire was estimated earlier at 25 acres, but officials downsized it after winds blew heavy smoke out of the drainages. It was 75 percent contained and full containment was expected Saturday.

Officials said that anyone camping in the area within the past few days should contact Kim Jones, U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer, at (970) 498-2507.

Morgan County Fire Causes Concern

A wildfire estimated at 2,000 acres broke out midday Friday in Morgan County and threatened several homes before it was finally contained.

The fire, located about 10 miles south of Fort Morgan, burned at least one outbuilding.

No homes were burned and there were no reported injuries, according to the Morgan County Sheriff's Department.
