Someone is breaking into churches in the western section of Lakewood and leaving a lot of damage behind.Police said six different churches have been hit, the majority of them are in the Green Mountain area. The suspects aren't finding much to steal and instead leave behind costly damage, investigators said. The seven burglaries have occurred all within the past six weeks. The churches that were hit were the Evangelical Lutheran Latvian Church, Glennon Heights Mennonite Church, Encounter Church, Grace Fellowship Church, Church of Latter Day Saints, and Concordia Lutheran Church.
A spokeswoman with Concordia Lutheran Church said she didn't think the burglars intentionally meant to vandalize and it appears as if they were just looking for something to steal. She said the church's safe was destroyed, doors were broken where the burglars kicked in the deadbolts, and petty cash was taken. If you see any suspicious activity around a church at unusual hours, contact police at (303) 987-7111.
